This is how the Alarm Room at Fire Headquarters was configured in January 1954.  The four separate telephones were most likely for the emergency, non-emergency, dispatch and direct PD lines.  A small table top switchboard was installed a few years later.  CLICK to enlarge.

This 40-year old photo shows an unidentified Hamden firefighter (with booster line), HPD Sgt. Henry "Dutch" Otto and HFD Lieut. Jack Laffin.

The late model Camaro flipped over on Dixwell Avenue at the railroad bridge when the young driver "tried to climb the abutment on left," according to notations on the photo.  The young woman driver was pinned inside her car, but was extricated by firefighters who pried open the passenger side door.

Our thanks to HFRA Honorary Member Chan Brainard, who recently sent in this photo of Hamden’s 1959 Maxim “cab-forward” pumper in the 1961 Connecticut State Firemen’s Convention Parade.  It was assigned as Engine 2 at the time.  Chan wrote, “I took this photo from somebody's front lawn, high up on a bluff in (I think) Danbury.  But, here's something interesting: note the red wooden sign mounted along the hard suctions.  It reads ‘West Woods Fire Company #9.’

"Clearly, the volunteer company persuaded the paid department to allow them to "Showcase" the new pumper.  I believe that the paid firefighter riding the rear step was Art Smith."

Volunteers from Highwood pose with their brand new Stewart chemical truck, delivered in February 1918 at a cost of $1,800.  It remained in service at the Highwood station until March 1926, when a new Maxim 500 GPM pumper was delivered.  The 1918 Stewart chemical was then assigned to the Mix District Volunteer Fire Co. 7, where it remained until delivery of their new 1935 Dodge Bros. truck.
