Spring Glen - 1948

Back in 1948, ten-year old Hamden fire buff Chan Brainard witnessed Hamden fire apparatrus at work in his Spring Glen neighborhood.  The top four photos are believed to have been taken somewhere on Bedford Avenue.  The bottom four were of a call on Swarthmore Street near Whitney.  All photos are believed to have been taken by Chan's older brother, Bill.

The exact nature of both incidents is unknown, and neither is believed to have resulted in any serious damage.  But there are some nice views of classic Hamden fire apparatus.

Stern views of the '39 Diamond-T pumper and the '38 Diamond-T Squad, both out of HQ.
"Is that you, Bubba?"
Whitneyville's 1928 Maxim in the background. Firefighter mopping his brow appears to be Dan Hume.

'38 Squad next to what appears to be a 1946-48 Chrysler.
Nice starboard view of 1941 Diamond-T city service ladder truck. Is he jumping on or off? (and why?)
1939 Diamond-T. The 1946 Pontiac Streamliner in the background is probably Chief Spencer's car.
Nice view of the windshield installed on the back of the '38 Squad by Supt. Clem Wetmore in 1942. This was a time when not just the guys in uniforms wore hats.
