Captain Robert Chadwick
(1944 - 2019)
We have been notified and are saddened to report the passing on April 24th of retired Captain Robert Chadwick, 74, who was a member of the Hamden Fire Retirees Association and the Hamden Guardian Services Retirees Association.
Besides his wife Margaret of 39 years, he leaves one son, Michael Chadwick and his wife, Beth, two sisters, Florence Sengstacken and Judy Kassack and her husband, Evan, his favorite sister-in-law, Katie Underwood and three grandchildren, Peyton, Hannah and Cate. He also leaves his brothers-in-law, John (Joanne) and Jeff.
Bob was appointed to the Hamden Fire Department in 1969. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1981, and captain in 1986. After his retirement in 1992, Bob spent a great deal of time in his second home in Puerto Rico, where his ashes will be laid to rest. There will be no funeral.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob's family at this sad time.

Increased Hamden-North Haven M.A. Gives Rise to
Inter-Department Training Exercises
With the increase in mutual aid calls between the Hamden and North Haven Fire Departments in recent years, Hamden and North Haven got together last week for the first training exercise of its kind involving the career personnel of both departments.
The website thanks Training Officer Lieut. Charles Lubowicki Jr. for the information and photos below, and also for the intiative that went into planning and carrying out this pioneering and potentially lifesaving training effort by both departments.

From April 22nd to the 25th, the fire departments from Hamden and North Haven met at the High Meadows State facility on Hartford Turnpike to conduct mutual aid interoperability training.
Each day, one of the four shifts from the respective departments reviewed and discussed each other’s response protocols, Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs), and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) equipment. This was followed by a series of MAYDAY drills where one crew would simulate being lost, disoriented, or injured in a building and a rescue team (RIT) from the other department would find and remove them.

These drills also focused on communication between the different towns operating from a unified command consisting of the Hamden Battalion Chief (shift commander) and North Haven Incident Commander.
This training is imperative as a rising call volume for both departments has led to increased mutual aid responses in both towns. Hamden Fire Chief Gary Merwede stated "Mutual aid training and emergency agency interoperability are essential for the safety of the community we protect and the personnel that respond to large scale fires and emergency events.
Hamden is fortunate to have great relationships with our neighboring fire departments, and the opportunity to interact with the North Haven Fire Department during this four day training session strengthened our abilities in emergency communications, tactics, and firefighter safety.”
Both departments would like the thank Phil Prue, site supervisor at High Meadows and the fire administrations for their support, including North Haven Fire Chief Paul Januszewski, Deputy Chief Scott Martus, and Hamden Fire Chief Gary Merwede.

Thursday Kitchen Fire

At 4:26 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2019, the Hamden Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke in the home at 86 Warren Street. The occupant had just returned home and saw the first-floor filling with smoke. She immediately left the house and called 911.
Hamden Rescue Company #2 arrived four minutes later and reported a working kitchen fire. The main body of the fire was quickly extinguished, and crews overhauled the kitchen area to check for extension and ventilated the smoke out of the structure. Battalion Chief Gary Couture declared the fire under control at 4:40 p.m.
There was heavy fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the home, but did not extend to the adjacent apartment.
Fire Marshal Brian Dolan has determined that the fire started due to a stovetop burner being accidentally left on. The burner ignited a pan that had cooking oil in it. Three residents were displaced as a result of the fire. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

Spark Time
Website fan and Florida resident Joel van Horne sent these photos of a Howe-GMC 750 GPM pumper. He wrote, "Just got back from a trip to North Carolina and found this 1972 GMC fire truck in a salvage yard in Highlands, NC. I forgot to ask how much they were selling it for. I could actually imagine getting to drive this around town with my granddaughter in the front seat." (Trust us, Joel, she'd love it!)
It is hoped that this pumper is not actually going to be scrapped. If its firefighting days are over, perhaps it will be peserved somewhere as a reminder of its service and of those who manned it during its heyday. Thank you, Joel, for sharing these pix!

Regarding this one-of-a-kind 1939 Ahrens-Fox "Quint" that was featured in the March 1st weekly update, another website fan, Stan Troski, wrote, "Andy Leider from Middletown, NY has it - He is a real estate attorney and has over 400 fire engines!"
Thank you, Stan! It's very gratifying to know that this unique apparatus is still around. Now all we have to do is program Middletown, NY into our GPS.
