ANNOUNCEMENT
To all HFRA Members: The password to access all archived and "Members Only" pages for HFRA members will be changed sometime on Sunday, April 14th, at which time the new password will be emailed to all HFRA members in good standing. The user name will remain the same.
To all Non-member Subscribers: The password to access archived pages for non-member website subscribers will also be changed sometime on Sunday, April 14th, at which time the new password will be emailed to all subscribers in good standing. The user name will remain the same.
To all website visitors: Regular weekly Friday updates will end on Friday, June 28th, followed by the usual Summer Bulletin Board. Beginning September 1st, the HFRA website will be updated from time to time during every month, with each month's postings being archived thereafter and available to all HFRA members and website subscribers.

We deeply regret to report the sudden passing of Eric Anthony Slater (52), son of Karen and brother HFRA member Bob Slater, in Sarasota, Florida early Wednesday morning, of an apparent heart attack. Besides his parents, Eric is survived by his wife, Annie, son Michael, daughter Alyssa (Nick) Bolick, and a granddaughter, Jaina Bolick.
The funeral service for Eric will be held on Friday, April 19th, at Jennings Funeral Home, 5750 Swift Road, Sarasota, FL 34231. Calling hours will begin at 10:00 a.m. and services will follow at 11:00 a.m.
Please keep Bob, Karen and Eric's family in your thoughts and prayers at this very sad and difficult time.

Deck Fire at Town Walk Drive Apartment
|
At 3:43 on Friday afternoon, April 12, the Hamden Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 8100 Town Walk Drive. Neighbors in the apartment complex noticed a fire on a third floor balcony. They were able to alert the occupant of the apartment who was able to safely exit the apartment.
The fire was partially extinguished by the neighbors. The fire department arrived at 3:46 and extinguished the remaining fire and performed overhaul operations.
Fire Inspector Nelson Hwang has determined that the fire was caused by a cigarette discarded in a garden planter earlier in the day. The deck had heavy fire damage. The unit remains habitable and no residents were displaced as a result of the fire.

Spring 2019 HFRA Meeting
Thursday, April 11th
|
The members of the Hamden Fire Retirees Association held their 41st regular meeting this past week at the Hamden Elks Lodge hall. A moment of silence was observed for FDNY Firefighter Christopher Slutman, who died in Afghanistan last week while serving with the U.S. Army (see below). The Association welcomed one of its newest members, Jay Connolly, who retired in November after nearly 38 years on the job. Several important issues were discussed (see minutes once they are posted). The summer meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, July 10th. Members will be notified well in advance.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Three American service members and a U.S. contractor were killed when their convoy hit a roadside bomb on Monday near the main U.S. base in Afghanistan, the U.S. forces said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
The U.S. and NATO Resolute Support mission said the four Americans were killed near the Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, while three others were wounded in the explosion. The base in Bagram district is located in northern Parwan province and serves as the main U.S. air facility in the country.
The wounded were evacuated and are receiving medical care, the statement said. It added that in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the names of service members killed in action were being withheld until after the notification of next of kin.

Website congratulations to Ashley Petrillo, daughter of our own HFRA member Paul Petrillo, of North Haven. Ashley, a healthcare management student at Albertus Magnus, recently appeared on a "friends week" edition of Wheel of Fortune with a friend from Stamford. Together they won $22,000. Nice going!

Spark Time
Hamden's first postwar apparatus, this 1951 Maxim 750 GPM pumper, was barely a year old when it was re-assigned from Humphrey Station 2 to Putnam Avenue Station 3, after a virtually identical Maxim pumper was delivered to take its place at Station 2. This pumper replaced the 1928 Maxim 750 GPM pumper that was always assigned to Station 3. The '28 pumper was traded in to O.B. Maxwell for $900 credit toward the purchase of the '52 Maxim.
