Retired HFD hydrant maintainer Larry Gershman collects lots of historic memorabilia, including old fire department photos.  Recently, Larry allowed us to scan a number of his old photos for the HFRA archives.  Among them were these December 1958 I.A. Sneiderman photos of then-Firefighter Joe McDermott with the department's brand new Maxim aerial ladder truck at Station 2.

The ladder truck was re-painted red in 1971.  In 1976, it was transferred to Station 5, and Station 9 in 1984.  It remained in service as a spare until it was sold to a private buyer in 1991, the same year that Joe retired as a shift commander.  First thought to have been junked, we understand the truck was re-sold several years ago to a Virginia buyer (we hope).

-  1974  -

From a color slide taken by Ed Doiron Sr. in the summer of 1974, this "monochromized" image of Wilbur Baker in the Alarm Room at Station 4 will be included in "Hamden Firefighting" when it is published by Arcadia later this year.

-  1957  -

Sixty years ago this week, the old one-room schoolhouse at Johnson and Still Hill was turned over to the newly-formed West Woods volunteers.  And, under "It Takes All Kinds," an elderly local resident - we removed his name - made a fool of himself with a legendary Hamden cop after trying to outrun a Hamden fire engine.  Lots of us have witnessed bozos like this guy.

-  1980  -

Every summer, the firefighters' bargaining unit contributed the cost of a 5-gallon bucket of high-expansion foam.  In 1980, the one-year old Local 2687 bought the foam. Chief Leddy sent Engine 5, the minipumper, to the YMCA Camp at the end of Downs Road.

Firefighters Ed Doiron and Clark Hurlburt, with the assistance of Co. 5 volunteers Brian Smith, Larry Gershman and Ed, Jr. spread the foam for the kids to play in.

NEVER FORGET!

We will always remember our brother firefighters who made the supreme sacrifice, and the thousands of other innocent victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Always keep them, their families and the FDNY in your thoughts and prayers.
